Pictured Rocks Kayak Quest Safety Rules |
1) Weather: If on-shore wind speed exceeds 20 mph and wave heights exceed 3 feet the races may be moved to Munising Bay or held on Sunday July 12th. If lightning is present the races may be delayed or moved to Sunday. If inclement weather persists on Sunday the races may be cancelled altogether and refunds will be made. 2) PFD: A Coast Guard approved personal flotation device must be worn when paddling. 3) Bulkheads: A stem bulkhead with sealed hatches or floating bags are required for each kayak. 4) Other Safety Equipment: A bilge bump,spare paddle, paddle float and spray skirt are required for all kayakers. All paddlers should begin a self-rescue until help arrives if a capsize occurs. 5) Clothing: Kayakers will be expected to wear paddling gear that adequately reduces heat loss if a capsize occurs. Average water temperature is 50 degrees. Dress appropriately! 6) Food and Beverages: Kayakers will be expected to carry appropriate food and beverages. 7) Power Boat Assistance: Power boats may provide assistance to kayakers without disqualification; one will be anchored at each of the turnaround points and others will monitor the racecourses. 8) Landing: Kayakers are expected to "hug" the shoreline and where possible may go ashore at anytime without disqualification; toilets are available at both turharound points. 9) Time Window: The 17 mile course will be closed at 5 p.m. and the 10 mile course will be closed at 2 p.m.; any competitors still in the water must board a chase boat at those times. |
